“Does anyone else think it’s weird that the son of Ares is acting as the voice of reason here?!”
Richard’s mother, Molly ‘Gun Moll’ Barr, rode with a biker gang when she first met Ares. They had a brief, torrid romance, that ended with Molly getting pregnant and Ares, as always, departing quickly. Molly swiftly realized that the gang was not a good place to raise a child, and left, setting up a (slightly) more stable home in a trailer park in Florida.
Rich’s young life was pretty typical of a poor demigod kid with a single mom in a trailer park. There were plenty of bullies, and even his natural strength and talent for brawling wasn’t enough to keep them at bey when they came on in groups. His mom worked long hours, going to school in the evenings, leaving little Rich to his own devices most of the time.
Finally, as he headed into middle school his mother finally graduated and got a promotion. They moved up in the world, into a real house. With his mother not needing to spend all her time in school anymore, he finally got to spend some real time with her. He went to a nice school. He made friends, and he joined the football team, where his natural strength was a major benefit. It finally seemed that the world was going to go his way. And for a few years, it was good.
He was a linebacker. Hardly the star, but he was part of the team, and he was friendly with the rest of the squad. Together, they made it to the state championship in his second year on the team, when he turned 12. They were on the bus when it all went sour. A manticore attacked the bus, hungry for the flesh of the young demigod. But in the course of the attack, the beast severed the gas line, and there was an explosion. Rich managed to escape with the help of the satyr waterboy, but all of his teammates died, either in the initial explosion, or from the burns they suffered.
Since then, he’s made his way to camp half-blood, and spent most of his time training. He’s sworn to never let a friend of his die like that again. But for the most part, that oath has manifested as a reluctance to make close friends of any sort. He’s been marked as a child of ares, but he has yet to truly meet his father. For a son of Ares, he’s surprisingly level-headed. Some suspect the gruesome fashion his heritage was revealed to him to be at fault.
